There is no single best HMI software for every machine or plant. WinCC Unified is a logical first candidate in a Siemens estate; FactoryTalk View or FactoryTalk Optix belong on a Rockwell shortlist; AVEVA InTouch HMI fits existing Wonderware/AVEVA applications; Ignition Perspective is strong for responsive, multi-vendor applications. Schneider, Mitsubishi and Omron tools deserve the same installed-estate test. The correct choice is the exact edition that fits your controller, panel or runtime, passes the operator workflow test, and has a supportable licence and recovery path.

If you need a fast answer, do not start by counting animation objects, protocols or tags. Start with the controller and firmware already installed, the target runtime, the required abnormal-condition workflow, the recovery owner and the complete commercial bill of materials. Use those constraints to reduce the field to two or three candidates. Then make every candidate run the same data, failure and restore scenario. Selection boundary: this article can identify credible candidates and tests. It cannot know your installed firmware, approved hardware, operator population, cyber architecture, regional contract or support capability. Those facts belong in the project decision record.

This table is not a universal rank order. If you have a supported installed application, trained technicians and a validated graphics library, migration risk may dominate greenfield feature advantages.

How to choose HMI software

Start with six decisions before looking at feature checklists:

  1. Controller and protocol: list each PLC, firmware, communication module and required protocol. “Supports OPC UA” is not enough; prove the exact namespace, data types, quality and reconnect behavior.
  2. Runtime target: distinguish an operator panel, industrial PC, web client, mobile session and plant-wide SCADA server. The same product family may licence and deploy these differently.
  3. Operations workflow: define the process overview, equipment detail, alarm response, permissive/interlock diagnosis, trend investigation, recipe and maintenance workflows.
  4. Lifecycle: require source ownership, reusable libraries, version comparison, backup, clean-system restore, security patches and a supported upgrade path.
  5. Commercial boundary: request engineering seats, runtimes, clients, tags, drivers, web access, historian, redundancy, support and upgrades in one dated bill of materials.
  6. Evidence: use the same acceptance scenario, operator, PLC data and scoring rubric for every candidate.

Mandatory qualification gates

A product that fails a mandatory requirement should not recover its position through a high score elsewhere. A polished graphics editor cannot compensate for a missing driver. A low quote cannot compensate for an unsupported runtime. Treat the following as pass/fail gates and document the evidence beside each answer.

Weight the tradeoffs only after the gates pass

Weighting is project-specific. A brownfield packaging line may put 35% of its decision on installed-estate compatibility and only 10% on responsive web design. A greenfield multi-site project may reverse those priorities. Agree weights before demonstrations so an impressive vendor presentation cannot move the goalposts.

Build a proof environment before the demonstration

Use an isolated controller, approved emulator or vendor test rack that represents the production data contract without creating an unsafe path into the plant. Record the PLC firmware, driver, network path, runtime build, engineering version and licence in a small environment manifest. Seed one normal start, one permissive rejection, one process alarm, one communication loss and one runtime restart.

The acceptance team should include an operator, controls engineer, maintenance technician and the person who will own the runtime or server. Cybersecurity and IT operations should join when identity, remote clients, Windows/Linux hosts, databases or enterprise connections enter the architecture. Give every candidate the same preparation boundary: either the supplier builds all examples, the project team builds all examples, or the division of work is stated in the record.

Siemens describes WinCC Unified as an HMI platform spanning panel-, edge- and PC-based applications. The current official page documents HTML5/SVG/JavaScript technologies, web clients, Siemens and third-party connectivity, and a free 21-day engineering/runtime simulation trial.

Shortlist it when:

  • S7 controllers, TIA Portal libraries and Siemens support already define the plant standard.
  • A consistent project model across Unified Comfort Panels and PC runtimes reduces engineering risk.
  • Web-client access and open interfaces are requirements.

Verify on the exact release:

  • The precise WinCC Unified engineering and runtime edition, TIA release and panel firmware.
  • Required PowerTags/data points, clients, archives, audit, reporting, redundancy and options.
  • Migration work from WinCC Comfort/Advanced/Professional or legacy panel projects.

2. Rockwell FactoryTalk View

Editorial fit: Established Allen-Bradley and FactoryTalk plants, particularly where PanelView Plus or existing View SE applications must be maintained.

Rockwell’s FactoryTalk HMI documentation separates FactoryTalk View from FactoryTalk Optix and points engineers to the Product Compatibility and Download Center for release notes, supported operating systems and requirements. Within View, Machine Edition and Site Edition are different deployment scopes; do not compare them as one runtime.

Shortlist it when:

3. Rockwell FactoryTalk Optix

Rockwell positions FactoryTalk Optix as a separate modern HMI platform with panel, station and web-client deployment, responsive graphics, version management, OPC UA, C# scripting and third-party drivers.

Shortlist it when:

  • You are not constrained to an existing View ME/SE application.
  • Responsive graphics, web design/test workflows or Linux-capable runtimes matter.
  • The team can support a newer platform and explicitly validate its device drivers and lifecycle.

Verify:

  • The runtime token/package sized for the application.
  • Driver support for the exact controller and firmware.

4. AVEVA InTouch HMI

Shortlist it when:

  • Legacy InTouch applications, symbols, historian data and local integrator knowledge are valuable.
  • AVEVA System Platform, Historian or related operations products are already in the architecture.
  • Migration continuity is more important than adopting a new engineering stack.

Verify:

  • InTouch Workstation versus Unlimited and any Flex/subscription scope.
  • Web clients, historian, drivers, redundant nodes and engineering seats.
  • Migration of WindowMaker/QuickScript, industrial graphics and older operating systems.
  • Regional pricing and support; a public US package price is not a universal project quote.

5. Ignition Perspective

Editorial fit: Responsive web/mobile HMI, multi-vendor plants and database-connected applications built on the Ignition gateway.

Inductive Automation’s Perspective documentation describes browser-based, responsive sessions that share the Ignition platform’s tags, database connections, reports and security. Perspective is an Ignition module, so compare the required gateway, modules and support as one system.

Shortlist it when:

  • Browser and mobile layouts are core requirements rather than afterthoughts.
  • Several PLC vendors, SQL integration or MQTT/enterprise data paths must coexist.
  • Public module pricing and a gateway-centred architecture help commercial planning.

Verify:

  • Required device drivers and third-party modules.
  • Perspective session/client model, redundancy, historian, reporting and alarm notification.
  • Gateway and database sizing, store-and-forward, identity providers and backup.
  • Responsive design effort: one project can target many screens, but usable layouts still require testing.

6. Schneider EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert

Editorial fit: Harmony HMI and industrial-PC projects in the Schneider ecosystem.

Schneider states that EcoStruxure Operator Terminal Expert creates HMI Runtime applications for Harmony HMIs and iPCs. Its current product page emphasizes reusable vector objects, templates and supported secure protocols. Verify:

  • Harmony model and firmware, Basic versus Professional engineering scope, and iPC runtime licence.
  • Required web viewer, OPC UA and remote-access options.

7. Mitsubishi MELSOFT GT Works3

8. Omron Sysmac Studio / NA-series HMI

Omron’s Sysmac Studio integrates logic, motion, robotics, safety, vision and NA-series HMI engineering. That integrated project can reduce duplicate tag/configuration work in an Omron estate.

Verify:

  • The edition that includes NA HMI development.
  • Controller, NA terminal, Sysmac Studio and firmware compatibility.
  • Simulation scope, reusable objects, user/security design and restore.
  • Third-party controller connectivity when the plant is not exclusively Omron.

Also consider CODESYS Visualization. If the target controller already uses CODESYS, its official visualization family covers WebVisu, TargetVisu and CODESYS HMI. These have different runtime and licence boundaries, so treat “CODESYS visualization” as a family rather than one free HMI product.

Current trial, pricing and evaluation evidence

“Free HMI software” can mean a free editor, a time-limited trial, a simulation-only environment, a runtime with limits, or open-source code that your team must support. These are not interchangeable. Trial terms and public packages can change, so use the linked vendor page and record what was available when the pilot began.

Use trials to remove uncertainty, not to postpone the commercial boundary. Before the pilot ends, request the production bill of materials, activation or entitlement recovery procedure, supported version path and the support contact who owns an outage. If the trial uses a development laptop while production uses a panel, Linux station or redundant Windows servers, repeat the runtime-critical tests on the target architecture.

HMI versus SCADA: choose the right scope

An HMI gives an operator a visual interface to a machine or process. SCADA extends supervisory control and data acquisition across more controllers, servers, clients, users or sites and typically adds broader alarm, historian and reporting responsibilities.

The categories overlap. WinCC Unified PC, FactoryTalk View SE, AVEVA InTouch/System Platform and Ignition can serve scopes that people call SCADA. A panel-native editor may be exactly right for one machine and the wrong architecture for a multi-site system.

Use the SCADA software comparison when the project requires redundant servers, many clients, plant-wide history, remote sites or a central operations layer. Use an HMI-first shortlist when the runtime belongs to one panel or machine and plant-level functions sit elsewhere.

Design quality matters more than the visual theme

The ISA-101 series covers the HMI lifecycle from design through operation and change. ISA does not endorse the products or order in this article; it is a useful lifecycle reference for requirements, philosophy, style guides, implementation and management of change.

A serious evaluation should test:

  • overview-to-detail navigation;
  • abnormal-state visibility without relying on colour alone;
  • alarm priority, acknowledgement, shelving and history;
  • permissive and interlock diagnosis;
  • trend context around an upset;
  • text legibility at the real viewing distance;
  • touch targets with gloves where applicable;
  • user roles and high-risk action confirmation;
  • communication loss and stale/bad quality indication;
  • multilingual layouts and long translated strings;
  • backup, restore and runtime replacement.

Alarm and trend acceptance tests

Ask every candidate to implement the same alarm set:

The alarm test is not a colour inspection. Start from a documented process consequence and required operator response, then verify that the configured priority and display state support that response. ISA-18.2 provides a lifecycle frame for alarm systems; it does not certify a platform or replace site rationalization. Record which alarms were seeded, their sequence and the expected first-out cause. A candidate that displays all consequences but hides the initiating event has not passed the same scenario.

For trends, seed a known process value, setpoint, controller output, alarm state and data-quality transition on a shared timebase. Verify engineering units, ranges, timestamp origin, daylight-saving/time-zone behavior where relevant, history gaps and export. A visually smooth trend can still be wrong if it interpolates through bad quality or aligns events from different clocks without making that transformation explicit.

Lifecycle, migration and clean recovery

The best greenfield editor can be the wrong brownfield decision when a plant owns thousands of validated displays, scripts, symbols, alarm definitions and technician procedures. Inventory the existing application before promising conversion. Count external fonts, ActiveX or custom components, scripts, SQL dependencies, communication servers, certificates, scheduled tasks, service accounts and runtime-specific files—not only screen count and tags.

Treat migration as a controlled engineering change. Convert a representative slice containing the hardest objects: indirect addressing, recipes, audit, scripting, alarm history, trends, security, multilingual text and a third-party driver. Compare behavior against the old runtime. When exact behavior should change, tie that change to a requirement and operator acceptance rather than allowing conversion side effects to become the new design.

Recovery includes more than application source. Capture runtime installers, version and patch level, licences or entitlement procedure, communication drivers, operating-system/database requirements, certificates, service accounts, scripts, fonts, custom libraries, recipes and initial data. Store secrets in the approved secret-management process rather than the project archive. Test the restoration instructions with a person who did not write them; unexplained local knowledge is a recovery defect.

Pricing and total lifecycle cost

Do not compare a panel engineering licence with a plant-wide runtime or a public starter package with a redundant production architecture. Request one bill of materials containing:

  • engineering licences and concurrent-user rules;
  • panel, station, server and client runtimes;
  • tag/data-point or I/O tiers;
  • web/mobile clients;
  • controller drivers, OPC UA and MQTT modules;
  • alarm, historian, reporting, audit and recipe options;
  • redundancy and disaster-recovery rights;
  • annual support, upgrades and security patches;
  • training and integrator day rates;
  • hardware, operating-system and database licences;
  • migration engineering and production cutover.

Normalize the comparison over the project horizon your organization actually funds. State assumptions such as runtime count, client concurrency, data growth, support term, planned upgrades and spare strategy. Do not hide implementation or migration labour just because it comes from an internal team; those hours still consume scarce capacity. Keep tax and exchange-rate treatment explicit when comparing regions, and revalidate the BOM immediately before purchase.

Security and remote access

An HMI product’s secure-protocol checkbox is only one part of the system. Build a design covering identity, least privilege, certificates, segmentation, monitored remote access, patching, backups and recovery. NIST SP 800-82 Rev. 3 is a primary reference for operational-technology security architecture.

For browser or mobile access, verify:

  • where authentication occurs;
  • whether the client can issue controls or is view-only;
  • TLS/certificate ownership and renewal;
  • session timeout and reauthentication;
  • audit trail for operator actions;
  • DMZ/jump-host/VPN design;
  • behavior when the WAN or identity provider is unavailable.

Security evaluation must cover the complete deployed system, not only the HMI editor. A browser client may use modern TLS while the gateway-to-controller path, service account or backup remains weak. Conversely, an older-looking panel may be acceptable inside a tightly controlled cell when the risk assessment, compensating controls and replacement plan are explicit. The comparison should record residual risk and the person authorized to accept it.

Reproducible HMI proof-of-fit worksheet

Use one representative machine or process and record:

  1. Environment: product, edition, release, panel/runtime, operating system, PLC firmware, driver and licences.
  2. Build: time to create the overview, equipment faceplate, alarm list, trend and user roles.
  3. Connect: tag/data-type handling, reconnect time, bad-quality display and diagnostics.
  4. Operate: task completion time and errors for normal start, permissive failure, alarm response and manual recovery.
  5. Stress: alarm flood, communications loss, server/runtime restart and storage pressure.
  6. Secure: least-privilege roles, certificate setup, audit events and remote-access boundary.
  7. Recover: backup completeness, clean-machine restore steps, time to service and unresolved defects.
  8. Commercial: exact bill of materials plus support/upgrade assumptions.

Use qualitative evidence for early elimination and measured results for finalists. Where a numeric score is useful, define the scale before testing—for example, 0 means mandatory evidence absent, 1 means partially demonstrated with open defects, 2 means passed in the pilot, and 3 means passed plus verified lifecycle evidence. Do not average away a mandatory failure. Keep raw observations beside any score so the number does not become a false fact after the team forgets its assumptions.

Is Ignition better than a vendor-native panel HMI?

Ignition Perspective can be a strong fit for multi-vendor, responsive, database-connected or gateway-centred applications. How many HMI platforms should reach a pilot?

Usually two or three. Use the mandatory gates and installed-estate facts to remove unsuitable products before hands-on work. More pilots multiply engineering and operator time without necessarily improving the decision. Keep a documented reason for excluding credible alternatives, especially when procurement, regional support or a corporate standard narrows the list.

Recommendation

Build a two- or three-platform shortlist from the installed ecosystem and required runtime. Reject any candidate that cannot document the exact driver, licence, lifecycle or recovery path. Then run the same operator scenario and abnormal-condition tests on the same PLC data.
