NOCTI Industrial Maintenance Test: Blueprint, Format and How to Prepare
How NOCTI Job Ready assessments work, what the Industrial Maintenance Mechanics, Mechatronics and Electrical Construction blueprints cover (including the PLC and motor-control share), how students take the test, and how to practise.
Short answer: NOCTI is a US organisation that writes technical skills assessments, mostly for career and technical education (CTE). Its Job Ready assessments "measure technical skills at the occupational level." They usually have two parts:
- a written test, proctored online through NOCTI's QuadNet system (paper versions exist too)
- a performance test, judged by industry evaluators
For maintenance, NOCTI's Industrial Maintenance Mechanics test (code 2074) has a 169-question, 3-hour written part and a 3-hour performance part with four jobs. Students normally take NOCTI tests through their school, which orders the test and any study guides. NOCTI doesn't publish a test price for individuals, so check with your school.
Researched October 25, 2026 from NOCTI's published test blueprints and study-guide pages (sources at the end). The Industrial Maintenance Mechanics blueprint we found is dated 2007, and one state page lists different performance weights. Ask your instructor for the current blueprint for your test version.

The tests maintenance and electrical students usually meet
| Test (code) | Written part | Where PLCs and controls appear |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (2074) | 3 hours, 169 questions | "Basic PLCs" sit inside Electronics and Electrical Principles (13%). Motors and Motor Controls is 14%. Plus a "Troubleshoot Electrical Control" performance job |
| Mechatronics Level 1 (2040) | 3 hours, 209 questions | Computer and Control Systems (13%), including PLC functions and ladder diagrams |
| Electrical Construction Technology (4230) | 3 hours, 174 questions | Motors (7%) and Motor Control (8%); no PLC area. Performance: 3 hours 20 minutes, 3 jobs |
FANUC's robot operator and technician certifications were also built with NOCTI. See our FANUC training guide.
Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (2074) blueprint
Written test areas (from NOCTI's 2074 blueprint):
| Area | Share |
|---|---|
| Machinery and Equipment | 16% |
| Tools and Safety | 14% |
| Hydraulics and Pneumatics | 14% |
| Motors and Motor Controls | 14% |
| Electronics and Electrical Principles (includes basic PLCs) | 13% |
| Blueprints | 11% |
| Mechanism Drives | 10% |
| Industrial Robotics | 8% |
Performance test: four jobs in 3 hours (2074 blueprint weights):
| Job | Weight |
|---|---|
| Blueprint | 40% |
| Gear Drive | 26% |
| Circuit | 17% |
| Troubleshoot Electrical Control | 17% |
A New York State page for the same test lists different performance weights (20/31/29/20), so the version your school uses may differ. NOCTI's blueprint also lists a credit recommendation of 3 semester hours.
The takeaway: about a quarter of the written test is electrical (motors and motor controls plus electronics and basic PLCs). One of the four performance jobs is troubleshooting an electrical control circuit.

Try it: press START, then STOP
A stop-dominant seal-in rung: START latches the motor output through its own contact, and STOP breaks the circuit.
Watch the output lamp: it stays on after START until you press STOP.

How students take a NOCTI test
- Through a school or CTE program. The school's test coordinator orders the assessment and sets up online proctoring.
- Study guides and pre-tests are ordered by the coordinator. NOCTI's study guides are digital and include sample questions and checklists. NOCTI also publishes a general sample study guide.
- Results may count beyond the classroom. Some states and CTE programs use NOCTI results as an end-of-program skills measure; ask your school how yours are used.
How to prepare
- Get the blueprint for your exact test code and version from your instructor. Spend your time in proportion to the weights.
- Ask your coordinator for the NOCTI study guide or pre-test. It's the closest thing to an official practice test.
- Drill blueprint reading. It's 11% of the written test and 40% of the 2074 performance weighting.
- Practise motor-control circuits until you can trace them without thinking:
- start/stop with a seal-in
- forward/reverse with interlocks
- overloads
- control transformers
- Learn basic PLC ideas:
- inputs and outputs
- normally open and normally closed contacts
- coils
- timers and counters
- how a ladder rung maps to field wiring
- Practise troubleshooting as a method. Confirm the symptom, check power, isolate the half of the circuit that's at fault, measure, then fix and verify.
Free exercises that match those skills:
- the stop-dominant seal-in and forward/reverse interlock worked exercises
- the timer and counter set
Our product, for repetition with checking. PLC Simulation Software's electrical troubleshooting training gives browser fault-finding and ladder labs with automatic checking.
- Price: free to start; Pro is $29/month or $249/year.
- For teachers: a Class plan at $49 per student per year, with a 10-student minimum (product facts).
- Limits: it isn't NOCTI material, and it won't replace hands-on practice for the gear-drive and circuit jobs.
Frequently asked questions
What is on the NOCTI industrial maintenance test?
NOCTI's Industrial Maintenance Mechanics (2074) blueprint lists a 169-question written test covering machinery and equipment, tools and safety, hydraulics and pneumatics, motors and motor controls, electronics and electrical principles (including basic PLCs), blueprints, mechanism drives and industrial robotics. Its performance test has four jobs: blueprint, gear drive, circuit, and troubleshooting an electrical control.
How long is the NOCTI test?
For Industrial Maintenance Mechanics, the written part is 3 hours and the performance part is 3 hours. Mechatronics Level 1 and Electrical Construction Technology also have 3-hour written parts.
Is there a NOCTI practice test?
NOCTI sells study guides with sample questions, and pre-tests, which schools order through their test coordinator. NOCTI also publishes a general sample study guide. Ask your instructor which ones your program has.
How much does a NOCTI test cost?
NOCTI doesn't publish a public price. Schools order and usually pay for the assessments, so ask your program's test coordinator.
